Indonesia Showcases ISPO Digital Innovation

  • Indonesia demonstrates its commitment to palm oil sustainability through advanced digital certification systems at the prestigious Osaka Expo 2025.
  • The new SI-ISPO cloud-based platform integrates blockchain technology to ensure transparency and traceability in the palm oil supply chain.
  • This initiative positions Indonesia as a global leader in combining technology with sustainable agricultural practices to meet international market demands.

Indonesia has taken center stage at the Osaka Expo 2025, unveiling its comprehensive approach to sustainable palm oil management through the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certification system and its groundbreaking digital platform, SI-ISPO.

At a business forum titled “Sustainability of Indonesian Palm Oil to Meet World Need for Vegetable Oil,” PT Surveyor Indonesia’s President Director Sandry Pasambuna outlined Indonesia’s strategic vision for transforming its palm oil industry through mandatory sustainability certification and cutting-edge technology integration.

The ISPO framework, anchored in Presidential Regulation No. 16 of 2025, establishes seven principles and criteria that govern sustainable practices across three critical segments: plantation businesses, downstream industries, and palm oil bioenergy companies. This comprehensive approach reflects Indonesia’s determination to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship while maintaining its position as the world’s leading palm oil producer.

What sets Indonesia’s initiative apart is the introduction of SI-ISPO, a cloud-based information system that revolutionizes how palm oil certification is managed and verified. By incorporating blockchain technology, the platform ensures unprecedented levels of data security and transparency, addressing long-standing concerns about supply chain traceability that have challenged the industry globally.

The digital ecosystem connects multiple national agencies and platforms, including SIMONTANA, SIPERIBUN, SIINAS, ATR BPN, and EMR, creating an integrated network that streamlines data collection, certification validation, and product tracking. This cross-agency synchronization represents a significant leap forward in governmental coordination for sustainable agriculture.

PT Surveyor Indonesia, as a strategic state-owned enterprise specializing in surveying, inspection, and certification services, plays a pivotal role in ensuring the certification process maintains the highest standards of transparency and accountability. The company’s involvement underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging state resources for sustainable development goals.

The system produces two essential outputs that directly address international market requirements: ISPO Certificates for compliant business actors and ISPO Certified Product Transaction Sheets that provide comprehensive traceability information. These transaction sheets include detailed supply chain data, featuring traceability trees and certified land maps that offer buyers concrete guarantees of product legality and sustainability.

Looking ahead, SI-ISPO plans to incorporate artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies for advanced data analysis and process automation. This forward-thinking approach positions Indonesia at the forefront of agricultural technology innovation, demonstrating how developing nations can lead in combining traditional industries with modern digital solutions.

The timing of this announcement at Osaka Expo 2025 is particularly strategic, as global markets increasingly demand verifiable sustainability credentials. By presenting a robust, technology-driven solution to sustainability challenges, Indonesia strengthens its competitive position in the international vegetable oil market while addressing environmental concerns that have historically complicated palm oil trade relations.

This initiative builds upon Indonesia’s ongoing efforts to support smallholder farmers and promote sustainable practices across the agricultural sector. The digital transformation represented by SI-ISPO ensures that sustainability efforts are not just policy statements but verifiable, traceable realities that can withstand international scrutiny.

As Sandry Pasambuna emphasized during the forum, “With good governance, a modern information system, and support from all parties, we are optimistic that Indonesian palm oil products will be increasingly accepted and trusted in the global market.” This confidence reflects Indonesia’s evolving strategy of meeting global sustainability standards while maintaining its economic interests and supporting the millions of livelihoods dependent on the palm oil industry.
